So I personally found this a book that not only explains the routes one has to follow to approximately trace old US66; it also made for me fascinating reading. Tom Snyder founded the US Route 66 Association, and has been instrumental in preserving as many segments of the old road as possible.
Besides actual travel advice, it also is filled with interesting stories a This is ostensibly a travel guide, but I've always loved maps, atlases, and even geography texts.
Besides actual travel advice, it also is filled with interesting stories about the highway and some of its leading characters. I never got to take the tour, but I would do it if I could. I recommend it only to map aficionados like myself. Few photos, but many maps. Have to say that I enjoyed the second part of this book more than the first part, although the first section was admittedly much more informative! Good resource to have for next year View 2 comments.

About Tom Snyder. Tom Snyder.
Books by Tom Snyder. An appreciation for Route 66 has been kindled around the world and much of the highway is still there, gently curving along the landscape along side of you on I Take an exit.
Get off the Interstate. And take a fascinating vacation into America's extraordinary past. It's still there. And - Tucumcari Tonight! Chosen because of previous reviews. I found lots of information not included in travel brochures. History of local sites along the road have greatly enhanced my desire to see what Tom describes along the Route 66 corridor.
Some directions were slightly confusing but I was able to correlate his directions with Google Earth's Street Level Views. Some roadway changes may have turned some of his left turns into right lane exits but I found the road well marked by the various Highway Departments. Compared to the information sent by several State Tourist Bureaus, this publication was far superior. Earlier editions are still being sold and are ten years or more out of date.
That said, Snyder's combined guide and storybook is an absolute gem. It has been remarkably updated in every way for the latest edition.
The 92 maps and inserts are clear and uncluttered, while turn-by-turn directions make getting through cities and finding older sections of the road easy. Some small bits of new highway construction may interfere, but Snyder seems to have anticipated that as well, and recovery is easy. He brings to life so many roadside stories - from Wild Bill Hickock and Al Capone to Elvis Presley - that rambling through nearly every town becomes an adventure. And in the companion section of the book, it's total story time through every state all along the route.
I don't often review books, but this one deserves more than a good review. It should have applause.
Tom Snyder is simply a wonderful writer. This new, updated version of the classic brings Tom Snyder's trademark one-two punch of concise guidance and great storytelling. The book offers up Snyder's deep knowledge of the Mother Road, conveyed in a journalistic style that doesn't get lost in the weeds.
The first major section, "The Route 66 Traveler's Guide," is organized state-by-state, and provides easy-to-skim maps and directions, along with recommendations for alternate routes. Throughout, it is peppered with choice advice on where to stay and what to do that is clearly the product of research and road testing.
The following section, "Roadside Companion," is what you curl up with after a day's adventure, providing fuel for your dreams of the open road. Organized by state, it mirrors the first section.
My favorite vignette is "A Bowl of Red," on page The book is funny, sometimes philosophical, and often romantic, but never tiresome. In short, Tom Snyder is the guy you would want riding shotgun: Great with directions, never married to an agenda, not too chatty, but quick with a joke and ready with the right story for the occasion.
